Astro Tech Oxygen III (OIII) Nebula Filter - 1.25"

The Astro Tech Oxygen III light pollution line filter isolates the two glowing emission lines of doubly-ionized oxygen (at 4959ngstroms and 5007ngstroms) that are emitted by planetary and emission nebulas, while blocking the rest of the overall spectrum of light. The result is an extremely high contrast between the black sky background and the faint photons of glowing ionized oxygen.

It yields detailed views of the billowing tapestry of the Veil, Ring, Crescent, and Orion nebulas, among others. Its very narrow passband gives two to three times the contrast of a narrowband filter for observing brighter nebulas like M17 (the Swan) and M27 (the Dumbbell) from heavily light-polluted city locations. It is excellent for visually observing very faint planetary and gaseous nebulas (such as M76, the Little Dumbbell, and Barnard's Loop in Orion) that are normally invisible without a filter from mildly to moderately light-polluted sites. It is not designed for astrophotography or for observing reflection nebulas.

The filter has an ultra-hard vacuum-deposited multilayer dielectric coating that has been carefully designed to block all of the visual spectrum ranging from 400 to 700 nm, except for the narrow Oxygen III passband. This eliminates the unnatural colored halos surrounding bright stars that are often common with O III filters with less sophisticated coating technology. Ion beam hardened coatings provide excellent durability and resistance to scratching. Comes in a protective clear plastic case. A ribbed rim makes it easy to thread in and remove the filter from an eyepiece in cold weather when wearing gloves.

Astro Tech Extension Tube for 2" Focusers - 50mm Extension - Astro Tech part # AT50EXT

This Astro-Tech 50mm long x 2" diameter extension tube can be used to make up for the loss of light path when a 2" star diagonal is removed from many refractor telescope focusers and replaced by a camera and camera adapter for imaging.

One end of this Astro-Tech 2" diameter x 50mm long extension tube fits into 2" focuser drawtubes. This end is threaded to accept 48mm filters. A shallow safety groove is machined into the barrel of the extension tube. This groove engages the thumbscrew or compression ring of your focuser to prevent the extension tube and your camera from falling should the focuser thumbscrew loosen accidentally during use. The barrel extends 35mm into the focuser drawtube to provide a secure tilt-free installation when the focuser thumbscrew is firmly tightened.

The opposite end of the extension tube has a 2" diameter accessory holder that uses a non-marring brass clamp ring to hold 2" accessories in place. This accessory holder adds 50mm of extension to the light path when the extension tube is seated firmly into your focuser. The overall length of the extension tube is 85mm, 35mm extending into your focuser with 50mm of external light path extension. The extension tube is machined of aluminum, anodized black. The interior has anti-reflection threading.

This 1.25" Astro-Tech ultra-high contrast filter has a narrow 250 ngstrom FWHM (Full-Width at Half-Maximum transmission) passband for visually observing emission nebulas from badly light-polluted areas. It typically has a peak transmission in the 95-96% region at the visually important emission lines of hydrogen-beta at 4861 and both doubly ionized oxygen lines at 4959 and 5007. This high transmission combines with the narrow passband to make emission nebulas stand out briskly against a dark sky. It can also be useful in hunting down and enhancing very faint nebulas from a dark sky observing site. It is not designed for astrophotography or for observing reflection nebulas or galaxies.

There is some minor leakage in the deep ultra-violet portion of the visible spectrum that can be seen in the transmission graph feature image below, but the transmission of the mercury light pollution lines near 4050 and 4370 is essentially zero. Only the youngest observers, those whose vision still extends into the deep ultra-violet, might see a trace of chromatic aberration if this filter is used on a low quality achromatic refractor. Older observers, whose ultra-violet vision started to degrade when they passed 25 years, are unlikely to see any trace of the leakage.

This Astro-Tech narrowband filter has a passband that is 15-20% narrower than some competitive filters, plus very steep passband cutoff slopes, to give it higher contrast on very faint objects. It has 2 to 4 times higher contrast than broadband filters, making it ideal for faint nebulas such as the Helix, Rosette, Veil, and North American. Brighter nebulas (such as the Omega, Dumbbell, Lagoon, etc.) stand out well under city lights.
