Review & Description

This 2" Astro-Tech first-surface mirror star diagonal has state-of-the-art 46-layer dielectric mirror coatings for a full 99% reflectivity, higher than the 88% of a conventional aluminum diagonal or the 97% of an easily-tarnished silver diagonal. The durable ion-deposited dielectric coatings on the mirror's finely-polished 10mm thick BK7 optical glass substrate also provide higher contrast and resolution during critical planetary, lunar, and binary star observations. This Astro-Tech diagonal is, quite simply, unique among premium-quality 2" star diagonals for its exceptional value.

The mirror housing is precision-machined from solid aluminum, rather than simply flimsy plastic or a sheet metal stamping, as you'll find with ordinary diagonals. A rigid U-shaped die-cast metal backplate with stainless steel hardware holds the mirror in perfect optical alignment in the machined body. The solidity of the construction is mirrored in the diagonal's substantial 17 ounce weight. The interior of the body is lined with light absorbing materials, in addition to being anodized an antireflective matte black. The 2" focuser-side barrel is also anodized antireflective matte black, and is internally antireflection threaded for even higher contrast. The barrel is threaded to accept standard 2" filters.

Rather than using a metal thumbscrew that contacts eyepiece barrels directly and can scratch them, the diagonal's 2" eyepiece holder uses a non-marring soft brass compression ring to secure 2" eyepieces and the standard equipment 1.25" eyepiece adapter in place. The knurled and chromed thumbscrew that operates the compression ring is a full 1/2" in diameter, twice that of competitive diagonals. This provides a sure grip in cold weather when wearing gloves or mittens. A slanted groove cut into the outside of the focuser-side 2" barrel engages with the scope's focuser drawtube thumbscrew to act as a safety stop. This keeps the diagonal from

Review & Description

These split and hinged optical tube mounting rings are made of solid aluminum, anodized black for long life. They are felt-lined and have a large hand-tighten knob to lock them on your optical tube. A heavy nylon washer prevents the knob from marring the anodized finish. The rings have a 124mm internal diameter to fit refractors with a 124mm OD tube, such as the Astro-Tech AT111ED. The rings weigh 15.2 oz. each.

There are five 1/4"-20 mounting holes on bottom of the rings for mounting on most equatorial mount dovetail plates. One hole is centered in the flat mounting boss in the bottom of each ring. It is flanked by a pair of holes on 60mm centers, and a second wider pair on 80mm centers. An identical set of five holes on the top of each ring allow installing a second dovetail plate to carry accessories. Two 7/8" long x 1/4"-20 thread hex head bolts are supplied with each ring for mounting the ring on a dovetail plate or equatorial mount using the center hole or two flanking holes.

Review & Description

This filter is a must for all digital imaging with Digital Cameras, CCD Cameras, and modified Web Cams. Also useful for protecting valuable H-Alpha filters from heat stress and damaging IR (Daystar, etc). Due to their extremely high optical quality, these filters may be stacked and used far in front of the focal plane (necessary for imaging uses). Like the Baader Planetarium Contrast-Booster, the UV-IR-Cut filter uses the very latest coating technology, to deliver the finest filtration quality and lifetime durability.

Review & Description

The OIII narrowband filter isolates just the two doubly-ionized oxygen lines (496 and 501nm lines) emitted by planetary and emission nebulae, while blocking the rest of the overall spectrum of light. The result is extreme contrast between the black sky background and the faint photons of OIII light needed for detailed views of the Veil, Ring, Dumbbell, Crescent and Orion nebulae, among other objects. Each filter has an ultra hard, vacuum-deposited coating carefully designed to block all of the visual spectrum ranging from 400 to 700 nm. This eliminates the un-natural colored halos surrounding bright stars common with O III filters of less sophisticated coating technology.
